Masterton District Council, in partnership with Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, proudly presents Matariki 2025: Matariki mā Puanga – Celebrating Together—a FREE vibrant, community-focused celebration of reflection, connection, and renewal.
This year, the Wairarapa community will come together over two magical evenings to honour the Māori New Year with light, performance, learning, and kai.

🌟 Tirama Matariki Light Festival 🌟
At the heart of the festivities is the much-anticipated return of Kahungunu ki Wairarapa’s Tirama Matariki Light Festival—a free, family-friendly event illuminating Te Ropiha, in the green space just across from the War Memorial Stadium.
From 6pm–8pm each evening, dazzling light displays and interactive installations will bring the stories and significance of Matariki to life for all ages.
🌟 Stadium Events & Entertainment 🌟
Across the road, in the Stadium, an exciting programme of performances, workshops, and cultural experiences awaits. The space will be open from 5:30 - 8pm.
Friday 30 May:
- A showcase of local kapa haka groups from schools across the district, celebrating the talent and pride of our rangatahi.
- A lineup of local musicians and performers, bringing warmth and energy to the evening.
- A variety of kai stalls, with food available for purchase—attendees are welcome to bring their own.
Saturday 31 May:
- Interactive workshops where attendees can immerse themselves in cultural activities, including poi and kite making, learning a new waiata, and creating their own whetū (stars).
- Kai stalls available throughout the evening for everyone to enjoy.
